        How Hollywood Handles History

Most Hollywood screenwriters don’t hold Ph.Ds in history, and most people who hold Ph.Ds in history don’t write Hollywood screenplays, yet every now and then Hollywood manages to make a movie about a historical subject that doesn’t completely desecrate the historical record.  Here are a few movies that fit that description, and also a few others that don’t.

        degree of historical accuracy: low

Pop quiz. The great pyramids of Egypt were built by:

        a) human beings
        b) Extraterrestrials
        c) woolly mammoths

Director Roland Emmerich’s initial response to this question was B (see Stargate). But after nearly two decades of additional research, Emmerich decided to cross out his answer and pencil in C instead. According to most experts, Emmerich was wrong on both counts: the pyramids of Egypt were indeed built by human beings. (credit: Warner Bros.)
