For Real: Hollywood's Best True Stories

The magic of movies is that they transport us from our own lives, allowing us to connect with people, places, and worlds we would not otherwise experience. Sometimes, however, the truth is even better than fiction, and cinematic tricks are just a bonus. The stories that follow are of that genre: remarkable true tales of human bravery, daring, and achievement, and fantastic stories in their own right.

It's hard to believe that a Jew would ever attend a Hitler Youth school, but Solomon Perel did. Born in Germany, Perel had been living in a Russian orphanage when it was evacuated by Nazi soldiers. To escape persecution he posed as a Volksdeutcher, or ethnic German, and through tenacity and determined survival instinct spent the next four years hiding his identity. He even dated a fervent Nazi, although he had to forgo sex with her to keep his secret. Eventually the Nazis were beaten, and Solomon Perel could be himself again. (credit: CP Images)
