Made in Toronto: Famous Films Shot in T-Dot

If Toronto were a girl, she would be pretty in the most conventional way: with only slight alterations, her mildly smiling face could easily assume the visage of a hundred other women. Variously, she could be dark and mysterious, light and angelic, or classic and traditional. She would be hated by her classmates (Montreal, Vancouver, we’re looking at you), but loved by the citizens of the world.

As an urban centre, Toronto’s mix of standard “every city” architecture and classic monuments make it a film-maker’s dream, and the versatility of this fair Canadian city has been exploited by several filmmakers. Here’s a list of some of our favourite films shot in Toronto:

Kick Ass

We recommend watching Kick Ass at the Scotiabank Theatre on Richmond St. in Toronto, as the theatre is featured in the film. Listening to recognition ripple through the crowd as the cinema comes on screen is an exciting meta-adventure. Also exciting: this film makes no attempt to mask its location, despite the story being set in New York. A Yonge St. joyride, King West alley fight, and a TTC station transformed into a high school are all notable Toronto highlights in this entertaining comic book movie. (credit: CP Images)
